Five handwritten documents comprising a report file to the Bishop of Tlaxcala, processed in the ecclesiastical court of the
Diocese of Tlaxcala, Puebla, concerning charges of abuse of the local Indians by a parish priest, Juan Larios. Document 1
(1572 ; 5 leaves): A petition by Francisco de Vargas and related records concerning a "cartas de ejecución" or confirmation/certification
in his position as the royal alguacil mayor for the city of Puebla, a position that his father, among others, had held. Document
2 (1572 ; 13 leaves): Details four charges against Juan Larios, in Silacayoapam (Diocese of Tlaxcala, Puebla), for undue corporal
punishment of local Indians, including caciques and cicicas. Document 3 (1572? ; 18 leaves): Numbered leaves from 209-227.
Document 4, (1593 ; 165 leaves): Additional charges against Larios, now the beneficiado of Acatlán, in the state of Puebla,
for physical abuse of Indians there, especially whippings. Document 5 (1593? ; 1 bifolium): Drawing depicting 50 Indians,
most of them named, stripped to the waist and tied to a crossbar, presumably to show that they were whipped. After all of
the witnesses and information was gathered against Larios, he was absolved with a warning not to abuse his Indian parishoners
or extort donations, and that the Indians who have not confessed come forward to do so. The documents contain various examples
of late sixteenth century notarial script.

Although the establishment of the Colegio de San Juan in Puebla by Father Juan Larios is well-known and documented, little
is known of Larios's life. Father Larios was born in Atlixco, Puebla to a well-established family. He became the first beneficiado
(salaried ecclesiastic) of the town of Acatlán on 20 June 1576 and held that post intermittently until his death on 11 October
1596. While exercising the office of beneficiado in Acatlán, Father Larios was awarded a teaching post at the Royal and Pontifical
University of Mexico in Mexico City on 25 February 1587 with a salary of 150 gold pesos per year. The post was renewed in
1590 for another three years, but Father Larios vacated his post in November of that same year. At his death in 1596, Father
Larios bequeathed 100,000 pesos and his personal library for the creation of the Colegio de San Juan in Puebla. Father Larios
was buried in Acatlán, but as per his wishes, his bones were reinterred in the Cathedral of Puebla in 1641. In 1644, Bishop
Juan de Palafox formed the Seminario Tridentino (also known as the Seminario Conciliar Palafoxiano), which eventually unified
Father Larios's Colegio de San Juan with the newly established Colegio de San Pedro.
